We Celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee With A Look Back At Her Best Hats

2 Jun

Queen Elizabeth II is all set to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee–that’s 60 years on the throne as the Queen of England–and 60 years of elaborate hats.

Her Royal Highness is adored by her subjects, including Simon Doonan, who recently proclaimed Her Majesty QE2 (aka ‘Brenda,’ as she is known by her staffers) as ‘the most fashionable woman in the world’ in a hilarious piece for Slate.com:

In an era when the fashion landscape has fragmented into an infinite archipelago of conflicting trends and incomprehensible ideas, the only thing that really matters is to have your own signature look. Who has accomplished this if not QE2? Those boldly-hued matching dresses, coats, and hats—plus contrasting what-the-hell-does-she-carry-in-them handbags—positively scream “Brenda!”

Yes, Her Royal Highness is fly indeed. Here at Fashionista, we are particularly enthralled with her extensive hat collection. Homegirl has headgear for every occasion. Though her favorite hat might be encrusted with jewels, some of her more low-key looks are quite becoming indeed.

Since Brad Pitt’s the New Face of Chanel, Here are Other Famous Dudes in Fashion Ads

10 May

Chanel announced today that Brad Pitt will be the new face od Chanel No.5–making him the first ever male spokesperson for the iconic fragrance. That got us thinking: Could other storied brands go the same route as Chanel? Will we be seeing more handsome male faces in some of our favorite female-targeted campaigns?

If that’s the case, supermodel Coco Rocha  is not going to be happy. She tweeted earlier today: “No working model is happy for Brad Pitt and his new gig as the `face’ of Chanel No. 5.#ThingsBitterModelsSay Cc: @Models@StyleWatchMag.” Ouch. No doubt, Rocha would have leapt at the chance to represent the brand, whose eponymous designer she shares a first name with.

But while we highly doubt models like Rocha will get edged out by leading male actors, we couldn’t resist the chance to re-cast some of our favorite ads–with a little more testosterone this time.

Click through to see what James Franco, David Beckham, One Direction, and more, would look like as the faces of some of the most iconic fashion brands.

I was enjoying looking those guys from One Direction band :). They are so cute :).

8 Best Tressed Style Bloggers Dish Their Hair Tips and Tricks

24 Apr

Style bloggers make their living by how they present themselves on their blogs. Yes, clothes are important, but personal style is more than just what you wear. Hair, makeup, and intangibles like attitude all add up to a compelling persona. That being said, the seven girls we’re featuring here all helm super successful style blogs, and while their styles differ wildly, they all have one thing in common: amazing hair. We had to know how they maintain their marvelous manes. Click through to discover their hair secrets and favorite products, and get some inspiration.

Delmy Rivera of Fashion Bananas
As a makeup artist and hairstylist, perhaps this native New Yorker’s best client is herself. Her casual cottony curls paired with fluffy fringe make for one simple yet sophisticated style.

On Her Tress Tool Kit:
I’m very lucky—I have thick hair so I don’t need any products to hold up my curls. All I need is my 1.25-inch curling iron from Hot Shot and I’m good to go. To keep my hair healthy, bouncy, and shiny, I deep condition with Living Proof restore mask treatment. [Ed. note: This is the best hair mask EVER.]

On Her Primping Process:
My hair is naturally dark brown, but I dye it with L’Oreal Feria #63 in Light Golden Brown. And I usually curl my hair once a week, but I’ll touch it up a few times throughout, taking care to leave the ends loose.

On Her Mane Accessory:
With fashion constantly evolving, I think it’s important to change your hairstyle. (I’m constantly itching for a new look!) There are times when I find an updo makes your outfit look so much better; your hair can either make you love or hate your outfit.

Cyrena Arnold of Let Me See Your Wears
Two-tone tresses are still all the rage on this side of the pond, and the other. This London-based stunner’s strands are naturally raven, but her overtly ombré mane ensures she’ll always stand out in the crowd.

On Her Tress Tool Kit:
I color my tips with Swarzkopff XXL Live Colour in Platinum and Ice Blonde. To keep my bleached ends healthy I apply a nourishing treatment every so often; I’ve been using Moroccan Oil and IC Hair Polish for years. My scalp tends to get a bit dry, so I massage it with olive oil. As for styling tools, my hair is natural, so a blow dryer and a flat iron is key for me. And I can’t live without my tail comb, soft bristle brush, and paddle brush.

On Her Primping Process:
I colored my in four separate stages, lifting everything from mid-length to the ends from black to brown to auburn to blonde. To keep the ends from splitting and breaking I just make sure to wrap my hair flat around my scalp every night, and secure it with a silk headscarf to protect it from friction with the cotton pillowcase. If I want to wear natural-looking beach waves one day, I’ll roll my hair into a few little buns the night before—that way I won’t have to use heat to create the look.

On Her Mane Accessory:
Sometimes it works as an accessory; other times it’s a hindrance! I don’t really like the blonde tips against some colors, like yellow, but it’s perfect against purple. I see it more as an accessory to my outfits, I love to switch it up!

Denni Elias of Chic Muse
Easy, breezy, and incredibly beautiful: This pretty Parisian’s enviably long and loose locks—alongside her signature winged eyeliner—suit her simple and sexy stylish sensibility to a tee.

On Her Tress Tool Kit:
Hairpins and elastics help me keep my signature high bun tightly secured. And for the past year I’ve used Kerastase products and they seem to work really great! Lately I’ve been using their Nectar Thermique leave-in conditioner.

On Her Primping Process:
I love having long black hair; I like brushing my hair at night with a boar bristle and nylon tufts brush before making a loose braid to sleep in. In the morning I’ll brush it again before blow-drying and/or straightening it, depending on which style I plan to wear.

On Her Mane Accessory:
Whenever I think of my outfits, hair is one of the most important parts of that. It changes the whole concept of the look, and with my hair being so long I have to be even more careful. Lately I’ve found myself very obsessed with retro and sexy voluminous looks like Brigitte Bardot, however it seems my high bun has become my staple style, and I love it!

Lulu Chang of Lulu and Your Mom
Try as we might, we can’t think of a better hairstyle to suit the San Francisco-based style star. Her edgy choppy bob epitomizes the essence of her off-the-cuff, girlish grunge sense of style.

On Her Tress Tool Kit:
I keep it simple; while my hair is wet, I spray Aveeno’s Nourish + Condition Leave-in Treatment to enhance my natural waves and texture.

On Her Primping Process:
My hair is naturally wavy so I always air dry it; I never blow-dry. Right now my hair is mostly back to its natural color, but when I do decide to dye it, my go-to salon is B2V in Los Angeles. In fact, I’m obsessed with the reverse ombré hair seen at Prada’s Fall 12 show, but before I try that, I’m actually going platinum next week. Eek!

On Her Mane Accessory:
I’ve been short and brunette for almost a year now, but before this, I was short and red, long and red, and two years ago, long and ombré. Hair can reflect trends and my mood just as much as my choice in shoes.

Peony Lim of Peony Lim
The doll-faced stylist keeps her expertly tousled tresses in picture-perfect condition with a rather relaxed regimen that leaves her locks looking shiny and luxe with a laissez-faire sort of appeal.

On Her Tress Tool Kit:
I rely on Bumble & Bumble Shine Spray, Revlon Pro Tongs, WAM Blow Dryer, several L’Oreal Professional products and large pin clips.

On Her Primping Process:
Every morning I brush and assess the situation, so I only have to style it every two or three days. If I wear my hair straight, I make it extra smooth by blow drying on a cold setting with a large flat brush to smooth all the flyways, followed by a spritz of shine spray. If I wear it curly, I use tongs to curl and then pin the sections in place to cool, and I’ll brush them out after 10 minutes or so.

On Her Mane Accessory:
It is the finishing touch, and you have to make your hair work for your outfit and the overall silhouette of what you are wearing. Your hair can make or break an outfit.

Kristen Knox of The Clothes Whisperer
This American in London has all but mastered the shaggy chic mane; her quirky done-undone lob—long bob—is made that much more eccentric with auburn-tinged tips and full face-framing fringe.

On Her Tress Tool Kit:
My look is very low maintenance, especially where hair is concerned; I’ve never been one of those girls to groom. I have a lot of hair, so I like to keep it messy but controlled, because that’s my personality—ordered chaos. Dry shampoo and texturizing powders are my go to products, and every now and again, if my bangs are particularly misbehaving, I’ll whip out the flat iron.

On Her Primping Process:
This is slightly shameful to admit, but if there’s a brush handy, only then I’ll run it through. If not, I work with a spritz of dry shampoo and hope for the best! Ponytails are a last resort and side plaits come in handy on early mornings after a long night out.

On Her Mane Accessory:
My hair is a huge part of my look, and a very essential one. I have a small head and a lot of hair, so I’m prone to hiding behind it. I get very antsy when photographers put it up on a shoot; it makes me feel so naked!

Fashion News Roundup: Jean Paul Gaultier Will Make More Cone Bras for Madonna, Miuccia Prada Really Loves Aprons, and Lauren Santo Domingo is Expecting Again

15 Apr

Jean Paul Gaultier Dressing Madonna on Tour: It’s finally confirmed that JPG will once again be dressing Madge for her upcoming world tour– in one or more costume, still unclear– and we can only pray for an insane, updated revival of that Blonde Ambition cone bra corset. {Grazia}

Will.i.am is Getting Sued for Clothing Deal: The Black Eyed Peas frontman is being sued $2mil by a company called I.Am.Clothing (chicken/egg sitch there?) for allegedly failing to fulfill his duties as its spokesperson. It’s got us, got us questioning, where is the love?? {TMZ}

Kim Kardashian Covers a Beauty Book: Could hers be the face that sells a thousand books? Everyone’s someone’s favorite reality star has landed the extremely airbrushed cover of celeb makeup artist Scott Barnes’s new beauty book. Kim’s in good nude-lipped company with this one: Jennifer Lopez was a previous Barnes cover girl. {BellaSugar}

Miuccia Prada Just Loves Aprons: We love aprons because they (partially) shield our outfits from those inevitable kitchen calamities. Miuccia Prada loves aprons because they are “symbolic of women’s sufferance. It’s an emblem of women’s despair, their poverty, their passions.” Twinsies! {NY Mag via New York Times}

Alessandra Ambrosio is Pregnant and Eating Pizza: Most female celebs seem eager to strip down whilst knocked up, but bikini model mom-to-be Alessandra chose to stay covered up in her latest cover shoot for Spanish weekly mag Yo Dona… and we’re digging it. Check out the refreshing day-in-the-life shots, which include Alessandra doing her makeup and eating pizza. Yummy mummy indeed! {Fashion Gone Rogue}

Lauren Santo Domingo Confirms Pregnancy: And another fashion femme has got a lil’ one on the way! Vogue contributing editor Lauren Santo Domingo is expecting her second bebe with husband Andres, due in October. Mazel! {Page Six}

Are Women Better Designers Than Men? Despite historically designing more comfortable and practical womenswear (ie fewer binding corsets), women designers have been outnumbered by men ever since Christian Dior first came on the fashion scene. The highly anticipated upcoming “Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: Impossible Conversations” exhibit raises the question of why that is, and why it’s probably unwarranted–with input from X-Factor cast-off Hamish Bowles. {NY Times}

Adventures in Copyright: Was Jason Wu Inspired by Douglas Hannant?

8 Jan

Photos: Getty, Jason Wu

Douglas Hannant and Jason Wu share a similar design aesthetic and clientele (classy, high-end), but do they also share similar designs? The NY Post is reporting that “sources” noticed that a look from Jason Wu’s pre- fall 2012 collection was strikingly similar to a Douglas Hannant frock that Anne Heche wore in September.

The dress that Anne Heche wears in the center is by Hannant from his fall 2011 collection; the dresses flanking her are both from Wu’s recent pre-fall 2012 collection. The NY Post reported that the form-fitting red houndstooth on the left was the dress that was in contention, but the black and white dress–although the skirt is different–has a similar look, too. Douglas Hannant told the Post, “If I knew that Jason Wu liked my dress so much, I would have sold it to him.” Ouch.

So what do you think: forgivable coincidence or obvious knock-off?

Chanel Pre-Fall 2012: Paris-Bombay

7 Dec

Chanel Pre-Fall 2012

Leave it to Karl Lagerfeld to infuse all the decadence, luxury and over-the-top theatrics of the regular show season into the smaller, less-glitzy (until now) Pre-Fall season for  Chanel.

Set in the Grand Palais in Paris, models walked a circular runway bordered by two lavishly set long banquets piled high with fruits, flowers, candelabras and there was even a silver toy train that delivered decanters of liquor to guests (according to Style.com). In other words, it was fit for a king–or, in this case, a Raj.

The theme of the show was Bombay-meets-Paris and the clothing was a perfect blend of the two cities–think classic Chanel tweed jackets with Nehru collars and done up in neon pink; metallic evening gowns cut to look like saris; and classic French silhouettes pared with elaborate traditional Indian jewelry.

The exquisite collection is quite a feat considering Lagerfeld has never actually been to India. “It’s much more inspiring not to go to places than to go,” the designer told the audience after the show, according to Style.com.

Would You Rather…? The Barbie vs. Rodarte Starry Night Edition

29 Oct

Rodarte for Barbie?! Think again. This Vincent van Gogh inspired Barbie and the SS12 Rodarte collection aren’t related, but they look nearly identical.

From the fifties silhouette of the dress, to the purple bejeweled shoes, to the model’s flipped hair and heavy eyeshadow, Barbie and Rodarte have a lot in common. And here’s the catch, van Gogh Barbie was released on June 16, 2011, three months before the  Rodarte collection was shown at New York Fashion Week. So maybe  Kate and Laura  Mulleavy should add Barbie to their list of references?

Finally! Here’s the Gareth Pugh for MAC Makeup Collection

25 Oct

Back in June, news leaked that Gareth Pugh was doing a makeup line with his long-time runway collaborator, MAC. We got to meet and chat with the designer at an event back in July, where we ogled his nail polish and learned that the packaging was like a weapon. Well, now we finally get to see it in real life.

“With a collection that goes from strong, deep and mysterious to light, fragile, and ethereal, I think we’ve created a truly versatile collection that hopefully you’ll be inspired by and want to wear.” Gareth Pugh said in a release. And based on the individual pieces and the beauty look at left, we definitely want to wear it.

It’s a pretty full collection, and includes cream shadows, LipGlass, lipsticks, powder, liners, fake lashes, and even a makeup bag. The designer was inspired by everything from a hematite rock to butterfly wings. And those angular lashes are the result of him snipping away at a bunch of fake lashes that MAC sent him with the goal of making them non-lash-shaped. And while all of the packaging still has the signature MAC black sheen, it’s done in a much heavier material with a geometric “X” in the center.

GarethPugh-Beauty-72

But can we discuss the nail lacquers for a second? Gareth wore them layered and it had this amazing beetle-like finish with an iridiscent sheen. The three lacquers are Inert (creamy mid-tone grey/nude), Ascension (grey with blue violet reflective pearl), and Hyper (deep blue with violet pearl).

If you’re in North America, you can get the collection starting November 23, and internationally in December. Prices range from $15 for mascara to $75 for the makeup bag. Click through below to see all the pieces.
